Sir Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor honour for his role in the film ‘The Father’ at the British Academy Film Awards- BAFTA 2021. The other nominees of the award included a diverse pool of tremendous actors such as Chadwick Boseman, Tahar Rahim. Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen and Adarsh Gourav from ‘The White Tiger’.

The Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra on April 12, 2021, was appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind as a new Chief Election Commissioner of India. Chandra became the 24th Chief Election Commissioner of the country. He replaced Sunil Arora who has retired.

India’s Subject Expert Committee has approved Dr. Reddy’s application for emergency use authorisation to Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine. This is the third vaccine to receive emergency use approval in India after the two locally manufactured vaccines- Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Oxford-Astrazeneca’s Covishield.
5. (c) Chhattisgarh
The Chhattisgarh government on April 16, 2021, invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. The ESMA order prohibits refusal to work in essential services and it applies to all healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses and health workers across all government and private health institutions and sanitation workers.

Niger’s newly-elected President Mohamed Bazoum appointed Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou as the country’s new Prime Minister on April 3, 2021. Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou was the chief of staff to former Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou between 2015 and 2021. He has also previously served as Niger’s Minister of Finance and Minister of mines and energy.

Conservative Former Banker, Guillermo Lasso was elected as the next President of Ecuador on April 11, 2021. Lasso won 52 percent of the vote in the runoff against opposition candidate Andrés Arauz, who was handpicked by leftist former President Rafael Correa. The 36-year-old conceded defeat on April 11, after which Lasso declared himself President-Elect.

Singapore has become the first country to complete the official process for ratification of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement.

The La Soufrière, which had been dormant for over four decades, erupted for the first time three days back on April 9, 2021 and since then it has been erupting explosively, covering the main island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in ash and debris.

India skipper Virat Kohli has been named Wisden Almanack’s ODI cricketer of the 2010s decade. Kohli made more than 11,000 runs in the period, averaging over 60 and scoring 42 hundreds.

Flipkart recently announced that it is planning to acquire Cleartrip, which is a leading online travel and technology company.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on April 08, 2021, announced the discovery of a ‘Lost Golden City’ that was buried under the sands of the capital of Luxor in Egypt for the past 3,000 years.
